Our Classes

We offer a wide variety of classes both in and out of doors as well as interactive experiences and field trips for our students. True North caters to our littlest learners starting at 1 year all the way through our high school graduates. There is something for everyone at True North!

The Sciences - 1st through 12th grade

This course is designed to build an understanding of basic biology and its principles.  Students will study life through cellular biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, ecology, and classification.  Throughout this year, students will work together in small lab groups to perform experiments, test hypotheses, do microscope labs, and gather and record data.  We will also research famous scientists, pathogens, molecules, and scientific discoveries.  Some of our activities for the year include making 3-D models of cells, creating marshmallow DNA structures, dissecting a frog, a chicken wing, various plants, making an ecology diorama, and much much more!  Students will have weekly assigned reading and small homework assignments. High school students will have additional requirements, such as participating in a Famous Science Series, lab reports, and additional research.

Fine Arts - 1st through 12th grade

Over the course of our time together we will be learning about the following: The 7 elements of art: Color, Line, Shape, Form, Value, Texture, and Space.  All of these will be reinforced through various projects, worksheets and group discussion.  A solid foundation of the core elements of art ensure success in future artistic endeavors.  We will not be focusing simply on “projects,” but rather growing the skills to carry students through a lifetime of art.  This is a multigrade art course and quality of work expected should reflect a student’s age/ grade/ ability.

History - 1st through 12th grade

Early American History: This course will utilize a variety of source materials and books using a Charlotte Mason inspired Christian approach, including read aloud and age appropriate elementary lessons with hands-on crafts and activities relating to the time periods studied.  From the Jamestown and Plymouth colonial settlements, through the Revolutionary War, Civil War era, and Westward expansion up to the late 1800’s.

This course will explore two different time periods in history, beginning with Ancient Egyptian studies and then moving onto WWII Era History.  Students will start by exploring the history and culture of Ancient Egypt and its people, the impact of foreign powers, and how this lead to its decline.  Students will learn about Egyptian rituals, politics, hieroglyphics, important historical figures, and architecture.  The course will then shift ahead to WWII era studies, exploring European History and the causes for the war, the Holocaust, and the events that lead to American involvement.  Students will learn about numerous historical figures and events that occurred during this era, including the rise and fall of Nazi Germany, Auschwitz, D-Day, Pearl Harbor, the atomic bomb, and the long lasting impact of WWII into the Cold War.

Life skills and home economics - 1st through 12th grade

Have you ever tragically ripped your favorite piece of clothing?  Ever wanted to whip up a batch of scrumptious cookies for a friend (or yourself)?  This class is designed to empower you with these basic and practical skills, while allowing you the opportunity to dive deeper into something that interests you.  We’ll explore sewing, knitting, and crochet; cooking and baking; and some personal finance leading up to a Master Project to wrap up the year.  Whether you know your way around a craft store or need a map to find the fridge in your kitchen, there’s something in this class for you!

Creative writing and Literature - 1st through 12th grade

Various writing and literature courses are available for students in grades 1st through 12th. Students will experience courses involving topics such as classic English literature and Shakespear to  creative writing workshops where they will stretch their minds and writing and reading muscles with different creative prompts and reports.

Biblical Studies - High school

This course will focus on exploring the overarching narrative of the Bible as we take a high level and exciting journey through all 66 books, discussing its purpose, while taking into account the evidence that supports the truth of Scripture. Your child will walk away with a deeper understanding of who God has revealed himself to be through his word and the relevance Scripture has on our culture and individual lives today.

Nursery - 1 through 3 years

Our littlest community members will be well cared for in a safe and engaging environment.  Small group size and two teachers at all times will make for safe, easy work.  Children will be given short engaging activities and learn valuable social skills.  Please provide a snack if you choose and remain available for diaper changes.

Preschool through Kindergarten -   3 through 5 years

For the Pre-K/Kindergarten year students will be learning core concepts such as: the alphabet (a-z), letter sounds, numbers 1-20, shapes, weather, days of the week, and colors.  We will also explore age appropriate books and engage in fun learning activities.  Students will also participate in themed units throughout the year.  If your child is not potty trained please remain available for bathroom or diaper help.
